The inability (Impotent) of the UN Security Council to effectively address the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

The Palestinian-Israeli conflict is one of the world’s longest-running conflicts that has lasted for more than 70 years. It has caused immense suffering for millions of Palestinians and Israelis, and has been a source of instability in the Middle East region.

The United Nations (UN) has played an important role in efforts to resolve this conflict, but to date these efforts have been fruitless. The UNSC has passed numerous resolutions calling for a cessation of violence and a peaceful resolution to the conflict, but these resolutions are often ignored by both sides. The UNSC has been severely deadlocked, further exacerbating the global crisis.

One of the main causes of the UNSC’s impasse is the veto held by the five permanent members, namely the United States, Russia, China, France and the United Kingdom. The veto allows these five countries to veto any resolution that they deem detrimental to their interests. The UNSC’s sterility has adversely affected efforts to resolve various global crises, such as the wars in Syria, Yemen, and Israel-Palestine. In 2023, the UNSC failed to take action on the Israel-Hamas war, which killed thousands of people. The UNSC’s impotence has also weakened the UN’s credibility as an organization capable of maintaining international peace and security.

There are several factors that contribute to the UNSC’s inability to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. First, both sides have conflicting interests. Palestine wants independence and sovereignty, while Israel wants security and stability. Both sides are unwilling to compromise, making efforts to reach a peace agreement difficult.

The second factor is the veto from UNSC member states. The United States, which is Israel’s main ally, often uses its veto to block UN resolutions that harm Israel. This leaves the UNSC without strong authority to force both sides to resolve the conflict. In addition, the UN has failed to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict because both sides have conflicting interests, the United States often uses its veto to block UN resolutions.

and many UN member states do not have a great interest in resolving the conflict.

The third factor is the lack of political support from UN member states, especially Arab countries (PANARABISM) are not able to bridge this conflict, and also many UN member states do not have a great interest in resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, so they do not provide strong political support to peace efforts.

The incompetence of the UNSC in resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict has caused disappointment and frustration among the international community. Especially Indonesia, through the Indonesian foreign minister Retno Marsudi, on a visit to the UN until this moment, the UN Security Council has not been able to produce a resolution to the Palestinian-Israeli dispute and instead closed the door to access to humanitarian assistance, Retno Marsudi also in her final statement that Indonesia Stands with the People of Palestine, Many argue that the UN needs to reform to increase its effectiveness in resolving international conflicts.

Here are some recommendations for UNSC reform in an effort to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict:

– Develop a mechanism that can overcome vetoes from UNSC member states. This mechanism can be a majority vote mechanism or a mechanism that involves other international bodies.

– Increase political support from UN member states. This can be done by raising awareness of the importance of resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and by incentivizing member states to support peace efforts.

– Increase efforts to build trust between the two sides. This can be done by improving communication and cooperation between the two sides.

These reforms can help the UN to be more effective in resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and to realize a just and sustainable peace in the Middle East region.
